Amy Burkhart, MD, RD

Dr. Burkhart is a board certified Emergency Medicine Physician and a Registered Dietitian. She is also trained in integrative medicine. She now has an integrative medicine practice and specializes in treating celiac disease, gluten intolerance and digestive ailments.

She received her MD degree at University of California, Irvine College of Medicine. She completed an Emergency medicine Residency at the Highland Hospital/UCSF program. After her residency, Dr. Burkhart completed a two year fellowship in integrative medicine with Dr. Andrew Weil at the University of Arizona. Prior to her medical training she completed her undergraduate degree in nutrition and clinical dietetics at University of California, Berkeley and earned her certification as a registered dietitian.

Dr. Burkhart believes strongly in using her knowledge and training in Western/conventional medicine in conjunction with her training in integrative medicine and nutrition to optimize her patients’ health from this unique perspective.

*Her integrative medicine background gives her the capacity to use traditional and complementary approaches to treat other symptoms/diseases that may accompany celiac disease, gluten intolerance or other digestive ailments.

*Her nutrition/dietetics training allows her to analyze a person’s diet and make recommendations on how to improve a persons’ health through dietary changes for conditions such as, but not limited to, celiac disease, gluten intolerance, food sensitivities, irritable bowel syndrome etc.  She is able to guide patients through the initiation of a variety of specific “diets” to aid their path toward wellness.

*Dr. Burkhart lives with celiac disease and is also the mother of a child with celiac disease.  She understands, on a very personal level, the challenges of living with a chronic health condition.
