Carlyn Berghoff, CEO, Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group, is a multi-faceted businesswoman committed to her work, to her family and to her role in the community.
Author: Carlyn Berghoff wrote a best-selling cookbook, The Berghoff Family Cookbook (Andrews McMeel, 2007) and published her second, The Berghoff Café Cookbook: Berghoff Recipes for Simple, Satisfying Food, in September 2009. Her third cookbook came out April 2013 –Cooking for Your Gluten-Free Teen: Everyday Foods the Whole Family Will Love as told from Carlyn and her teenage daughter, Sarah’s perspective. A chef, caterer and restaurateur: Carlyn is a chef who graduated from the Culinary Institute of America, one of six females in the class of 1982 and president of the Student Body. She received her bachelor’s degree in hospitality management from Florida International University in 1983. In 1986 she opened Artistic Events, a premier off-premise catering company that she has operated ever since. In 2006, after her parents closed the Berghoff restaurant, she purchased the assets, moved her catering company to the historic Berghoff building, and now operates the bar, dining room and café there. In 2008, Carlyn renamed her company the Berghoff Catering & Restaurant Group.
Wife and mother: Carlyn is married to Jim McClure; their family consists of two daughters and a son. Despite her demanding schedule, Carlyn cooks with her children on weekends and most weeknights.
At ease with the public: A 25-year catering veteran, her company has staged events for heads of state, celebrities, and Fortune 500 companies. Carlyn is a seasoned “meeter and greeter.”
Committed industry advocate and civic leader: Raised and educated in the restaurant business, Carlyn is deeply committed to her industry and has played a lifelong role in hospitality and Chicago tourism. Carlyn understands the economic impact her field has on the city’s long-term viability and is an active member of several industry and civic organizations including: the National Restaurant Association, Culinary Institute of America, Washburne Culinary Institute, DePaul University College of Commerce Advisory Board as well as University of Chicago Celiac Disease Center Advisory Board. Carlyn has served on the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for Choose Chicago and is currently a member of the Chicago Rowing Fundraising Team.
After 15 years of eating and cooking gluten free, Carol Kicinski founded Simply Gluten Free in 2007 as a gluten-free recipe and lifestyle blog and website – her thousands of fans have made it a #1 Google site. Its purpose is to educate, assist and inspire those with celiac disease or intolerance to gluten, dairy, peanut, grain or other allergenic elements, and also those with vegan preferences.
To date, she has motivated millions to live HAPPY allergen-free lives! Carol’s core philosophy is “Look at the world of food in terms of what I CAN eat – not what I can’t!” Her recipe motto is “Gluten-free recipes that are not just “good for gluten-free” but just plain GOOD, period!!”

In a professional career prior to her recipe development, Carol was ahead of the sustainable energy curve as she was the Financial Controller for a $32M Solar Corporation. As a humanitarian and adventurer, Carol has assisted the National Red Cross around the world and was one of the first responders at Katrina’s Central Command assisting the troops. She’s lived to tell about being charged by elephants and rhinos (literally) and has dived with Great White sharks in Africa.

As a Clinical Nutritionist and Food Scientist at Goya Foods, MeriTerese Racanelli, M.S. works directly with Goya’s research and development team to provide guidance on the nutritional benefits of specific ingredients, recipes and foods associated with the variety of Hispanic origins of Goya consumers. Vanessa Maltin Weisbrod is the Executive Editor of Delight Gluten-Free Magazine, an international publication geared towards people with food allergies, celiac disease and other medical conditions relating to food. In addition to the magazine, Vanessa also consults for a variety of gluten-free food manufactures and is an active member of the Advisory Board of the Celiac Disease Center at Children’s National Medical Center.
Vanessa is also the author of two gluten-free cookbooks: Beyond Rice Cakes: A Young Person’s Guide to Cooking, Eating & Living Gluten-Free was released in September 2006 and her second book is The Gloriously Gluten-Free Cookbook: Spicing Up Life with Italian, Asian and Mexican Recipes (Wiley) was released in April 2010.
